Yoga and the expansion of consciousness

Josefa Martins2 min read

Yoga practice makes each practitioner more aware of themselves and of their surroundings. It brings us inwards, concentrating on every part of the body throughout the practice and improving all the best that is in us. Concentration is a discipline of the mind, directing it systematically to a single object in its various aspects. With sustained concentration we reach meditation. Simply put, meditation – true meditation – leads to fusion with the object of meditation. Most often this is the object of our devotion, for example an Enlightened Master, a Divine Being (Ishvara) or the Cosmic Mother. This fusion leads to such an expansion of consciousness that anyone who has ever experienced it will never return to their earlier state of consciousness.

The expansion of consciousness and its memory change forever the person who experienced it. It cannot be passed on, but those close to them notice the change in its many forms: the gentleness, the tolerance, the smile, the simplicity, the gaze, the calm and harmony they feel in their presence. In short, everything has changed, shifting the axis of observation and analysis, the view of the world and of the real possibilities of the HUMAN BEING.

We are Beings of a Cosmic dimension, able to change our future with every act and every choice. What matters is that we become aware of this. We call this the expansion of consciousness, which widens as we practise Yoga. If we practise long enough and with the right guidance, we will reach the ultimate goal that Yoga offers us: Enlightenment (Samádhi).
