Breathing is a physiological process controlled by the autonomic nervous system, which means it happens without our conscious intervention. In Yoga, by making breathing conscious and learning to breathe better, we use more air with each inhalation, control the exhalation and store more Energy, which also means more Health and vitality.
Pranayama (yogic breathing) is therefore a process of absorbing and holding Energy (Prana), storing it in certain energy centres and distributing it throughout the body. The human body is a true accumulator and transformer of energy, and our health and vitality depend on how much energy we have and how well we use it. A healthy, happy person performs at a high level in any activity they take up.
Pranayama controls anxiety and stress, bringing them down to excellent levels; it improves concentration, so better results take less time; it helps regulate the heartbeat through proper breathing; it encourages positive emotions and, with practice, leads to meditation. Although the techniques of Yoga strengthen one another, they can be used on their own. However, the full power of Pránayama is only reached by practising at least Ásana and Relaxation as well, so that energy is used and distributed properly throughout the body.
May Light, Love and Wisdom always grow. Practise Yoga!
