Meditation in Yoga

Josefa Martins2 min read

MEDITATION is the unification of every aspect of consciousness, allowing us to reach the essence of things and become one with the Whole, dissolving duality.

Every Yoga practitioner aspires to meditation, the ultimate goal of Yoga. However, simply sitting down to meditate is possible only for a few people, advanced on the path of Yoga, who have mastered concentration techniques; who have mastered the posture (ásana), holding it for a long time without discomfort or even being reminded of the body; and who have mastered the breath (pranayama), able to pause it at any stage, along with other less well-known techniques.

That is why meditation is seen as the crowning point of Yoga, arising naturally when the practitioner is ready, usually after years of practising the other technical disciplines.

There are faster ways to reach the essence, meditation and Samádhi (enlightenment), one of which is complete surrender to God or the Creative Principle (Ishvára Pranidhana), seeing every creature as an extension of the Creator and acting accordingly.

This means moving into unconditional Love and Brotherhood among all people, and creating a new kind of awareness of oneself and others, with the certainty that we are all ONE and that what is good for one is good for all. This is a greater path in the Evolution of Humanity's Consciousness, towards Cosmic Consciousness.

This kind of Consciousness, anchored in Unconditional Love (centred in the Anahata Chakra), matches the vibration envisioned for a new age: more tolerant, happier, more enlightened. This is Yoga's true contribution to a better world, and it always begins with us.
